Research Essay: Compromise as a Political Norm in U.S. History

Key facts about this assignment: 

  • It's chunked into stages to keep students on track (see file). 
  • Prompt: You will analyze how compromise functioned as a political norm from the writing of
  • the Constitution through the Civil War. You will investigate one major historical compromise, evaluate its
    short- and long-term effects, and reflect on how historical examples of compromise relate to modern political
    and social issues
    (e.g., The Three-Fifths Compromise. etc. They are given a list--see file). 
  • ALL THE SOURCES ARE PROVIDED IN CANVAS except for one
  • For the one source they are supposed to locate independently, they're told to use JSTOR. 
  • Citation style: Chicago/Turabian (footnotes + bibliography format)

HIST 101 - Van Valkenburg (FALL 24)

Van Valkenburg is using the same prompt for History 101 in Fall 2024. I asked for question #1 if they had to address all  of the possible effects of the constitution and she said they could focus on one or two.


 

History 101 Research Paper, Due October 8th for one class (They do slide presentations before the paper is due)

Write a research paper on one of the following topics. The paper must be 4-5 pages.

Time New Roman, Font 12. All sources must be cited. Two Primary and two secondary sources must be included. MLA style or Chicago text style

Please choose from the following writing prompts: 

1.How did the American Constitution affect the American Culture, Nationalism, Laws, Women, Men, Blacks, Minorities?

2.What were the significance of the founding fathers? (John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Alexander Hamilton, John Jay, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, and George Washington)

3.How did the plantation affect the life of slaves? Explain using economy, women, culture, politics.

4.How did the Civil War affect the North? Economy, Politics, Women, Blacks, and Technology.

5.How did the Civil War affect the South? Economy, Politics, Women, Blacks, and Technology.

6. Relate the issue of "States Rights" and the issues of today facing the Constitution and its interpretation?
