From CUNY Academic Works, this activity described herein can be implemented in introductory chemistry and high school chemistry courses. The main goal of the project is to integrate a ubiquitous biodiesel production with experiential learning by providing a community-based project.

Academic service-learning at St. John’s University is a classroom/experiential site- based program that involves students in some form of required community service that benefits the common (public) good and uses service as a means of understanding course concepts.

Activity from Seattle Central Community College, Humanities/Social Sciences Division.

This lesson aims to develop students’ speaking skills in the context of environmental service learning. Specific skills involved are interviewing, investigating facts and information, making posters and reporting, and using appropriate vocabulary related to the topic of the lesson to link their ideas together.

The students spend one day at a Habitat for Humanity build site. They help with framing and other building aspects. Before they go to the site, they have a one hour discussion with the construction manager who discusses the energy efficiency aspects of the Habitat homes.

Students are asked to respond in a way they choose (as a class) to a geologic or weather related hazard. They begin with a study of the event, its causes and local effects. They then research the needs of the people affected. They research charities that serve the population affected. They choose a response (again, as a class). They educate the campus community about the geology/geography of the event, the needs and solicit donations.
