FRNC 1A: Beginning FrenchThis text is designed for the first semester of French. This elementary level course is a study of the French language and French-speaking cultures, with emphasis on the development of communicative skills and basic structures. The course combines in-class instruction and practice with self-paced study in the Language Laboratory. This beginning-level course is for students with no previous coursework in French.
LiberteLiberté, by Gretchen Angelo and Emmanuelle Remy, is a first-year college French textbook with a true communicative approach. It has been adopted by instructors at over thirty colleges and high schools (partial list below). The textbook may be downloaded for free in accordance with the license, or printed copies can be ordered.
French 101This book, by Roger Celis, is an introduction to French at a beginner level.
Au Boulot! First-Year FrenchAu boulot! is a two-year college French program consisting of: a textbook, workbook and 21 accompanying audio exercises; as well as a reference grammar, to be used the entire two years.
Tex's French GrammarThis site provides a pedagogical reference grammar that combines explanations with surreal dialogues and cartoon images. Originally built for students at the University of Texas at Austin as a user-friendly guide to French grammar, this web site may be profitably used by any learner of French, provided he or she possess a sense of humor.
Enhancing French SkillsEnhancing French skills is a website for intermediate learners of French. It includes authentic language videos from French websites, as well as interviews of French speakers on cultural topics. Videos and activities are organized into five broad themes and tagged by communicative language function with links into Tex’s French Grammar for specific grammar explanations and interactive exercises. Each theme includes a pdf of suggested classroom activities and homework.
LexiquefleBasic vocabulary and practice exercises on numbers, the family, parts of the body and other topics for beginning learners of French. Interactive activities can be downloaded for educational use.
