World Religions

A guide to help students explore the religions of the world.

So Many Religions, So Little Time

There are thousands of religions being practiced throughout the world. According to the Encyclopedia of American Religions, there are over 1000 Christian denominations in the United States alone. Yet, for many of us, our exposure to the religions of the world are limited to what we have experienced within our families, via our friendship circles, and through media and popular culture.

A great place to begin searching for a religion is the Encyclopedia of Religion, where you'll learn about thousands of different religions worldwide. Written by an international team of scholars and contributors this encyclopedia provides a wealth of information on different religions.

You can also use the link below to access a list of 600 religions. Explore the Member Profiles of several religious groups to identify several you find interesting. Do some preliminary reading on the Web to learn more.

Finally, search the Web to determine if your religious group has a local presence so you can contact them and attend a meeting/service. You can use the ARDA site to discover what faith traditions abound in Stanislaus County or your local county.
