AI Demands a Shift in How We Learn and Teach

At MJC, we recognize that artificial intelligence isn't just a technological trend—it's a fundamental shift in how we learn, teach, and prepare students for the future. Over the past year, our campus has embarked on a comprehensive journey to integrate AI literacy across all levels of our academic community. Many of these efforts are led by librarians at MJC. The following list is a summary of the work we have done to promote AI literacy within the MJC community.

College Policy

  • Senate AI Workgroup: An ad hoc Academic Senate AI Workgroup, co-chaired by librarians Iris Carroll and Stella Beratlis, met from January - December 2024 for the purpose of working on changes to policy and providing faculty guidance. Members included faculty from SLAE, BSS, and APH, after an open call from each school's Senate rep to recruit members.
  • Academic Integrity Policy Changes: In Spring 2024, the  AI workgroup proposed a change to MJC's Academic Integrity Policy to account for AI in its definition of plagiarism
  • Faculty Guidance on AI: In early Spring 2025, the MJC Academic Senate passed the document, MJC Policy Regarding the Use of Artificial Intelligence, that provides a flexible framework for language faculty should incorporate in their syllabi.

Faculty Professional Development

  • Faculty Guide on AI Literacy: Librarian Iris Carroll designed the Guide to AI Literacy in the Age of ChatGPT, an online guide to support the development of knowledge and critical literacy around AI.
  • Jose Antonio Bowen Workshops: The L & LC and the Office of Instruction, led by librarian Iris Carroll, brought the work of educator Jose Antonio Bowen to MJC in a series of four hybrid AI-focused workshops beginning January 31, 2025. Links to the recordings can be found on the "Teaching with AI" page in the Guide to AI Literacy in the Age of ChatGPT.
  • ASCCC Summit: Along with colleagues from Behavioral & Social Sciences, Business & Computing, and Online Education, librarians Iris Carroll and Stella Beratlis attended the ASCCC 2025 Academic Summit on Artificial Intelligence and Higher Education - Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow which took place in February 2025.
  • MJC Faculty Retreat: In Spring 2024, librarian Iris Carroll participated in an AI session at the annual faculty retreat.
  • Institute Week Workshop: As part of Fall 2024's Institute Week offerings to faculty, Iris Carroll presented an online workshop titled AI Literacy in the Age of ChatGPT.
  • Integrating AI into Libraries: In Fall 2024, librarians all participated in a 4-week professional development workshop by Library Journal on Integrating Artificial Intelligence in Libraries

Students

  • Roundtable Discussion: Librarian Iris Carroll organized Let's Chat: A Candid Conversation About AI at MJC, a roundtable discussion with faculty and students that took place on April 10, 2024. The event was livestreamed to the L & LC's  YouTube page and is available for viewing.
  • Student Worker/Tutor Training: As part of regular pre-semester student employee training in January 2025, librarians Iris Carroll & Stella Beratlis conducted a segment on AI Literacy for students who work as peer tutors and who help library patrons at the Welcome Desk.
  • AI Literacy Workshops: Librarians designed and presented Chatbots & Checkpoints: Where Does AI Fit into the Research Process, a workshop for all students. A total of seven workshops--2 at West campus, 4 on East campus, and one online--were offered.
