Happy spring semester! We're deliriously happy to share about upcoming L & LC programs as well as the usual Library & Learning Center services and resources offered to the MJC community.

José Antonio Bowen AI Series kicks off this Friday, Jan. 31

José Antonio Bowen, nationally recognized expert and co-author of Teaching with AI: A Practical Guide to a New Era of Human Learning, will speak to MJC faculty in a series of webinars sponsored by the L & LC and the Office of Instruction. The keynote presentation Thinking and Working with AI is Friday, Jan. 31, at 2:00 p.m. in CAT116 and online. February: Student AI Literacy Workshops start Tuesday February 4

Librarians are teaching hands-on AI literacy workshops during the month of February on both West and East. Please encourage students to attend; we think it's a great extra credit opportunity! First ones are Feb. 4, 2:35 - 4 p.m. and Feb. 5, 11:55 a.m.- 1:20 p.m. in Sierra Hall. Get the full schedule for our Chatbots & Checkpoints: Where Does AI Fit into the Research Process? workshops.

UnderSTANding Our Community series continues Feb. 4 and Feb. 18

The L & LC's partnership with CSU Stanislaus's library continues this spring with more viewing parties at the East L & LC in the presentation/instruction area (cool spot with large screen around the corner from the Checkout Desk). On Tuesday, Feb. 4: What's in a Name--on the importance of embracing our names and identities as a part of cultural healing and heritage reclamation. On Tuesday, Feb. 18: POV: I'm Differently Abled - Learn About Visible and Invisible Disabilities. Both at the East L & LC, 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Learn more about CSUS's Belonging Series.

Free subscriptions to the New York Times and The Atlantic

You may already be aware that through our library, anyone with a school email address can get a NYT subscription (instructions). Now, we're please to share we've also partnered with The Atlantic to provide unlimited access to Pulitzer-winning journalism, scholarly resources, and games for the entire MJC community.

To activate your access, follow these simple steps:

  1. Go to TheAtlantic.com/group-login or download the Atlantic app from the App Store or Google Play Store.
  2. Find Modesto Junior College in the drop-down menu when you sign in.
  3. Sign in with your school credentials.
  4. Enjoy your unlimited access to The Atlantic!

Faculty: If you're interested in receiving resources from The Atlantic on how to use their articles in the classroom, please fill out their Google form.

Loaner Laptops

The L & LC is out of laptops at present and does not anticipate having more than a trickle available from now on. Please remind your students they can use the L & LC computer labs to do their assignments if they don't have a device at home. L & LC computer labs are open Monday - Friday 7:30 a.m. - 8:30 p.m. and Saturday 8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. (only West is open Saturdays).

L & LC Services

We offer a plethora of services to students:

  • Library Checkout. Need to know where to direct student questions for the Library & Learning Center? Send them to the L & LC help desk at our email: circulation@mjc.libanswers.com. Checkout/circulation staff will answer questions about overdue materials, laptop check-outs, returns, and renewals, and more. When sending a question to the help desk on behalf of a student, please include that student's name and w#.
  • Tutoring/Supplemental Instruction/Embedded Tutor. We have in-person and online tutoring as well as additional specialized tutoring supports. Please contact tutoring@mjc.libanswers.com, or call:
    • 209-575-6346 (East Campus)
    • 209-575-6676 (West Campus)
  • Research Help. From teaching students how to find materials in our databases and online to helping them understand their assignments, librarians can help. In addition, we offer individualized services to faculty to support students' research-connected learning outcomes.
